Dear Alexei,
My name is Steve Curtis and I live in Melbourne Australia.

I have found your web page and have had a feast downloading such a wonderful array of treats. In particular I have tried out your protected mode tutorials and have found them to be very valuable!!

I wondered If I could find a way of sending you a *** few dollars ***** as an appreciation of your effort?

My interest at the moment is to use the i86 processors as embedded machines, much as I might have done with the 8051. To me, the Intel 386 series up to the Pentium 4 are a cheap and inexpensive way to get processing power (say for DSP or Robotics or CNC machines) and they are on a standard architecture that I have been using for years. Therefore I have been trying to find a away of treating the ''386 much as I would have any other embedded processor.(e.g 8051)... The big stumbling block is the operating system. If I go with DOS I have a ''fast'' 16 bit machine. If I want to use extra memory I must use DPMI, but this can be slow. The best thing I can do is to use Protected Mode and unleash the 32bit potential!! -- so.

What I was trying to do is to is:-
1) Maybe have a destructive boot from floppy, to my single application, without any OS at all or...
2) Perhaps use DOS to load the application and never to return to DOS without a reset.
3) BUT -- What your tut''s show me is that I may be able to run from DOS and return to DOS, but have full PM access in the meantime!!

This is so very exciting and thank you so very much for making your discoveries available to me. It is truly wonderful.

Warmest regards,
Steve
